A heritage rooted in fermentation.

Unlike botanical ingredients used in Ayurveda, Bacillus coagulans is a beneficial microorganism associated with the longstanding human practice of food fermentation, used across cultures to preserve, flavour and support digestibility.

01 · Heritage

Fermentation across cultures.

Bacillus coagulans, now also classified as Heyndrickxia coagulans, is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming and lactic acid-producing bacterium naturally associated with soil, agricultural materials and fermented food environments. It is found in traditionally fermented rice and vegetable-based foods consumed across parts of Asia, Europe and Africa.

Its ability to produce resistant spores distinguishes it from many conventional probiotics. These spores help the organism tolerate heat, acidic environments and other demanding conditions encountered during food processing and gastrointestinal transit.

02 · Food heritage

Traditional food and fermentation applications.

In grain, rice and vegetable fermentations, naturally occurring microbes transform carbohydrates into organic acids and other metabolites. The lactic acid-producing characteristics of B. coagulans contribute to the taste of fermented foods while creating conditions that discourage the growth of undesirable microorganisms.

The organism is associated with the production of short-chain organic acids, bacteriocin-like antimicrobial substances, exopolysaccharides and digestive enzymes such as amylases and proteases, helping explain why Bacillus species remain relevant in fermented food systems and are now being investigated as probiotic ingredients.

03 · From heritage to standard

From natural fermentation to standardized probiotics.

Traditional fermentation depended on naturally occurring microbial communities that could vary between locations, raw materials and production batches. Modern probiotic technology makes it possible to identify, preserve and manufacture selected strains under controlled conditions.

Bacospore® contains Bacillus coagulans MTCC 25308, a strain deposited with the Microbial Type Culture Collection and Gene Bank in India and with the American Type Culture Collection as PTA-126364. It is manufactured through controlled fermentation and standardized by viable spore count, transforming a general heritage of fermented foods into a consistent ingredient with defined identity, potency and quality specifications.

04 · Modern research

Traditional observations meet modern research.

Bacospore® MTCC 25308 has been evaluated in laboratory and animal studies for gastrointestinal protection, diarrhoeal support, collagenase inhibition and cholesterol reduction, including approximately 80.4% ulcer inhibition, 85.40% collagenase inhibition at 200 µg/mL and 97.72% cholesterol reduction at 1,000 µg/mL. A separate study evaluating four probiotic Bacillus strains found MTCC 25308 to show the strongest antioxidant activity of the group.
